Autumn feels almost inseparable from The Eternal Prince. The darker evenings, wet stone, falling leaves and colder air fit the world naturally. It is a season that already feels like something is ending while something else is beginning.
That is exactly the kind of atmosphere I wanted around the story.
A World That Feels Older
I like places that feel as though they existed long before the characters arrived. Old walls, narrow roads, forests, iron gates and distant lights create that feeling immediately. Autumn makes those places quieter and heavier.
The world does not need to constantly explain itself. Sometimes the environment can do the work.
Beauty Without Perfection
Autumn is beautiful, but it is not clean or perfect. Leaves fall. Rain darkens the roads. Trees become bare. The light disappears earlier every day.
That contrast works well with The Eternal Prince. There is beauty in the kingdom, but there is also danger, uncertainty and change beneath it.
The Beginning of Alexander’s Story
For me, autumn also fits Alexander himself. Book I is the beginning of something much larger. He is still discovering the world around him, the people in it and what will eventually be expected of him.
So when I imagine the opening atmosphere of The Eternal Prince, I rarely imagine bright summer days.
I imagine mist, rain, old stone and autumn leaves.
And somewhere beyond them, the kingdom waiting.
